Professional help is available for you, your spouse or a loved one.
You do not have to figure this out alone.
You may be wondering if you have a problem with sexual behavior, or you may be seeking help for some one that you care about. Either way, here are some things to consider:
• Mental health professionals believe that 5% to 8% of the population in the U.S. suffer from sexual addiction.
• The use of pornography, especially Internet pornography, is a common behavior for persons who struggle with sexual addiction. Although the Internet does not create sexual addiction, it does provide the opportunity for sexual acting out that can lead to the progression of behaviors that become even more problematic over time.
• Often feelings of shame, despair and hopelessness are not uncommon experiences for the sexually addicted person.
• Sexually addictive behaviors are secretive and the addict convinces himself or herself that they can manage them on their own. Failed attempts at stopping the behaviors cause further despair and hopelessness for the addict and partner.
• Sexual behaviors are often used to cope with problems, escape reality and/or, overcome boredom or anxiety.
• Mental health professionals think, with time, this repeated behavior results in changes in brain chemistry similar to that of a chemically addicted person.
