Treatment Philosophy

I use an integrative approach to counseling and a combination of methods to help individuals work towards recovery and help them challenge the cognitive distortions inherent in addictive disorders.  These approaches may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, Family Systems Approach and Person-Centered Therapy. I also recommend regular attendance in 12-Step Meetings such as SLAA and SA.

One of my special interests is the use of the creative process in sex addiction recovery and have published numerous articles on the topic. Creative techniques such as art therapy help addicts problem solve and heal deeper core issues such as shame. The creative process itself is self-affirming, life-giving and inherently corrective.

BIO

With over 30 years experience in the behavioral health field, I began to specialize in the treatment of sexual addiction in 1997 at the Meadows Treatment Center in Wickenburg, Arizona where I had the good fortune to work directly with Dr. Patrick Carnes, the pioneer of the sexual addiction field.

After returning to the east coast, I continued my work in sex addiction first as a family therapist at Keystone ECU in Chester, PA, then at the STAR Program in Wynnewood, PA where I have been since 2000.  I am a foundational member of the Advisory Board for the certification of sex addiction therapists and co-authored a chapter on assessment with
Dr. Carnes in the Clinical Management of Sexual Addiction (2002).

I am a full-time, tenured Professor of Psychology & Counseling and Graduate Coordinator at Caldwell University in New Jersey.
